Part of Ebook marketing: what to keep and what to drop for 2027
Ebook publishing questions nobody wants to ask out loud: ISBNs, exclusivity, publication, records
Answers to ebook publishing questions about ISBNs, exclusivity, publication status, decision records, PDFs, whether stores need separate ISBNs and review edits.
What to take away
Common ebook marketing questions should be answered for a named title, edition, and format. Add the territory, reader, seller, and campaign period. Policies vary across distributors and countries, and a marketing shortcut can create a metadata, rights, tax, or customer-support problem. Keep an owner and review date beside every operating answer.
- Answer distribution questions for the exact edition and format.
- An ISBN identifies a publication product, not a quality badge. Amazon KDP gives a free number that stays inside Amazon; Bowker sells one you can carry to IngramSpark.
- Confirm rights and publication status before promising availability. KDP Select ties an ebook to Amazon in 90-day terms.
- Price inside Amazon's 70% band, $2.99 to $9.99, or take 35%.
- Name the sample, the review route and the email list owner before launch.
- For 2027, recheck royalty bands, ISBN prices, and state privacy deletion rules each January. Treat any 2026 figure as a typical range until the seller posts its 2027 schedule.
Does every ebook need an ISBN?
The International ISBN Agency's guidance for digital publications explains that separate digital formats or usage constraints can make publications distinct products that need separate ISBNs. A reflowable EPUB, a fixed-layout PDF and a paperback can each carry its own number.
Bowker sells US ISBNs through MyIdentifiers, typically about $125 for one and about $295 for ten as of 2026. Amazon KDP assigns a free ISBN to a Kindle edition, and it stays inside Amazon's store.
IngramSpark and most library aggregators want an ISBN you own. A seller may have its own requirements, so confirm the current rules for every channel rather than presenting the ISBN as a universal legal or quality requirement.
ISBN Decision Checklist
Separate digital format or usage constraint?
Assign separate ISBN
One ISBN may suffice
Decide identifiers with the distribution plan, and preserve the mapping among title, subtitle, contributor, edition, and file. Map format, territory, seller record, and internal product ID. Never reuse an ISBN for another edition.
Correct mismatched metadata before a campaign sends readers to competing or obsolete records. Clean identifiers support affiliate marketing for digital products, where partners need accurate links and tracking.
| Question | Decision basis |
|---|---|
| Which reader? | Problem, genre, level, device, and trigger |
| Which format? | Content, reflow, media, accessibility, seller; EPUB for phones, fixed-layout PDF for workbooks |
| Which price? | Reader value, alternatives, fees, tax, margin; Amazon pays 70% from $2.99 to $9.99 and 35% outside it |
| Which sample? | Representative voice, depth, and navigation; Amazon's Look Inside shows about 10%, and BookFunnel plans typically start near $10 a month |
| Which retailer? | Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo Writing Life, Barnes & Noble Press, Google Play Books |
| Which email tool? | MailerLite (free to 1,000 subscribers), Mailchimp (free to 500 contacts), BookFunnel |
| Which review route? | NetGalley (a few hundred dollars for six months), BookSprout, StoryOrigin, BookBub |
| Which channel? | Reach, rights, reporting, control, and cost |
Should the book be exclusive?
Compare the actual program term, allowed formats, subscription treatment, promotional tools, and royalties. Check territories, renewal, removal timing, and the effect on direct or library distribution.
KDP Select runs in 90-day terms and renews unless you switch it off. Enrollment puts the ebook in Kindle Unlimited, where a page read has paid roughly $0.004 in recent months, and it blocks Kobo Plus, Everand and most library channels for that title.
Kobo Plus pays per page read without the Amazon tie. Apple Books, Barnes & Noble Press, Google Play Books and Draft2Digital keep a title eligible for OverDrive, Hoopla and Libby. ACX pays 40% on an exclusive seven-year audiobook deal and 25% on a non-exclusive one.
Model the opportunity cost and test an exit before enrollment. An attractive feature is not enough if the restriction conflicts with the audience's preferred channel.
Does posting a full ebook on a website count as publication?
Publication questions affect registration, deposit, contracts, evidence, and edition records. Do not infer legal status from whether a file is visible or downloadable. The seller's own jurisdiction decides whether posting a full ebook on a website counts as publication. In the United States, the Copyright Office says mere posting without authorization to retain copies is not publication.
Canada's Copyright Act treats making copies available to the public as publication. Check the local statute for the seller's market. Record who authorized distribution, what copies were offered, to whom, on which terms, and when. Seek qualified advice for the work and jurisdiction.
The U.S. Copyright Office's circular on websites and website content explains registration practices and notes that merely posting a work without authorizing users to retain copies does not itself constitute publication. The circular is U.S. administrative guidance about website content, not a legal conclusion for every ebook transaction or country.
Keep a decision record for each ebook question
The GAO evaluation design guide connects evaluation questions with evidence needs and design choices. Apply that discipline to common ebook marketing questions.
The W3C Privacy Principles statement gives web-system designers shared privacy concepts and warns against shifting privacy work to individuals.
Use this template for each ebook question:
Keep a decision record
- Decision owner
- Eligible population
- Evidence period
- Method
- Action
- What the result cannot establish
- Saved with date
If the same question returns, compare the records before changing the metric.
Pull numbers from one dashboard per channel: KDP Reports, Kobo Writing Life, Apple Books Connect, Google Play Books Partner Center and IngramSpark. Book list open rates typically run 20% to 40%, with clicks near 2% to 5%.
For common ebook marketing questions, keep the evidence record beside the decision so a reviewer can reproduce the reasoning without relying on memory.
Set the next review date for common ebook marketing questions and name the change that would trigger an earlier check. A dated evidence record also helps when you sort digital product strategy tools by export and cost.
Common questions
Is a PDF an ebook?
It can be sold as one, but suitability depends on layout, device, and search. Reflow, navigation, accessibility, and seller support matter too. A reflowable EPUB reads better on phones, and Amazon KDP and Apple Books both accept one. A fixed-layout PDF suits workbooks that need exact page geometry.
Do I need a separate ISBN for each store?
No. One number covers the same file sold through several retailers. A new format, a new edition or a different publisher name needs its own ISBN.
Can a review be edited?
Do not change a review's meaning. Preserve the source, permission, context, and connection. Keep the date and the exact approved excerpt. Amazon posts reviews from accounts that have spent at least $50 on the site.
How often should metadata be checked?
At launch, after each retailer or edition change, and on a scheduled backlist review.
