Part of Digital product pricing: a two-sided framework

Digital product pricing checklist: a coupon test run

A digital product pricing checklist for coupon and promotion code launches: the test run, the cases, the terms to state and the sign-off decision.

What to take away

  • A coupon is a pricing change with its own test plan, not a marketing detail.
  • Test eligibility, currency, dates, redemption limits, stacking, renewal, refunds and reporting.
  • Check the discounted order against the receipt, the invoice and the entitlement together.
  • Close the review only after a mature cohort reconciliation.

Decide the discount before you build it

A discount is a commercial design decision first and a configuration second. Name what the code is for, which priced unit it touches, who may use it and when it ends, then record the owner before anything is set up in the billing system.

Commercial Design Checklist

  • Buyer, job, alternative, budget recorded
  • Product, unit, rights, term defined
  • Fixed, variable, step, refund costs
  • Price range and packaging rationale
  • Currencies, tax, seller role verified
  • Discount, trial, renewal, refund approved

Each plan is a set of decisions rather than a mood board: the priced unit, what sits in each tier, the discount and renewal terms, and the markets and currencies the price has to carry. Record the decision and its owner in the same record before the page is built.

The coupon test run

Run these steps for every code before it goes public, and repeat them whenever product scope, billing, taxes or customer terms change.

  1. Approve the discount, its owner and the priced unit it applies to.
  2. Freeze the approved public copy and the billing objects behind it.
  3. Test eligibility, currency, dates, redemption limits, stacking, renewal, refunds and reporting.
  4. Run every supported currency and the tax scenario for each market.
  5. Verify the receipt, the invoice, the entitlement and the support script together.
  6. Record the exact page and price version against every order.
  7. Watch questions, complaints, refunds and manual adjustments.

For the tax step, the sales tax scenarios for each market decide what the discounted total should show.

What the billing system allows

Stripe documents coupons and promotion codes with percentage or amount discounts, duration, redemption limits, eligible products, customer restrictions, and code behavior. These are Stripe features, not a pricing strategy. Its documentation says promotion code controls can specify eligible customers, first-time orders, minimum order values, expiration dates and redemption limits.

Whatever the tool, test its current checkout, subscription, invoice, refund and reporting behavior rather than trusting the description. The strategy checklist sets out the evidence gates that sit above this test run. Fees that change the net result are compared in platform fees.

Cases to test

CaseTestWhat the record should show
Valid codeApply at checkoutSame discount on the page, receipt and invoice
Invalid codeEnter a wrong codeRejected, price unchanged
Expired or used upApply after the end date or limitRejected, with a message the buyer can act on
RenewalLet the plan renewRenewal price matches the approved term
RefundFull and partialTax, access and receipt agree

Include one test buyer who is unfamiliar with the product. Internal staff know what the fields mean and may glide past ambiguity that a first-time customer cannot resolve. Start that buyer on the page where the code is offered, as the code is met inside a digital product funnel.

State the terms with the offer

If a code makes an item free, the terms belong beside the offer. The FTC guide on the word free, 16 CFR Part 251, says all the terms, conditions and obligations of a free offer should be set out clearly and conspicuously at the outset.

The same guides cover reductions. When an ad does not state the former price or the amount of reduction, the Guides Against Deceptive Pricing, 16 CFR Part 233, say the reduction should be large enough that a consumer would believe a genuine bargain or saving was being offered.

Reconcile and sign off

Reconcile net receipts, variable cost and contribution against a mature cohort, using the same definitions in digital product analytics. A code that raises orders but erodes contribution is a finding, not a success.

The final sign-off should state whether to launch, hold, limit or revise. Attach the evidence and unresolved risks. A checked box without an owner, date, or test result is not control. Archive superseded prices without erasing the transactions that used them.

For every item, record pass, fail, not applicable or accepted exception, with the evidence location, reviewer and decision date. Set the next review date and name the change that would trigger an earlier check. The wider framework is in digital product pricing.

Common questions

Does a coupon need its own test?

Yes. Test eligibility, currency, dates, limits, stacking, renewal, refunds, and reporting.

How do I stop a code being shared?

Set limits on the promotion code, such as eligible customers, first-time orders, minimum order values, expiration dates and redemption limits, or apply a coupon directly to the customer.

Who owns the pricing checklist?

One accountable commercial owner coordinates product, finance, tax, legal, design, engineering, support, and marketing approvals.

When does the checklist close?

After launch data mature and the team records the decision, corrections, and next review.
